What is this project about?
The goal of this project is to design a poster that invites the John Abbott community to participate and contribute to a bioblitz species survey. It needed to include all the necessary information’s and links to access the app. We needed to create the poster in the art style of a pre-assigned art movement.
My design decisions
The art movement I had to follow for my poster was Constructivism. This pre-assigned choice influenced most of the design direction for this project. Basically, Constructivism uses dynamic compositions, abstract geometric shapes, and a black, white, red, and beige colour palette. Surprisingly, it ended up being the perfect movement for advertising, as Constructivism was, for a long time, propaganda art. Firstly, I chose a Canadian goose as my main subject because the animal is commonly found around John Abbott’s campus, where the BioBlitz is taking place.. I then added John Abbott in the background to emphasize the location of the event. Next, I placed all the necessary text, QR codes, and info. In addition, I went with a classic Constructivist look and made a beige triangle come out of the goose’s mouth, giving the impression that he is screaming the name of the event. Finally, I played with the layout (2 columns) to make sure everything was readable and clear. The school chose my poster as one of three posters to advertise the BioBlitz.
