What is this project about?
The goal of this project was to create a poster meant to communicate a message to a specific audience. It could promote an event, an idea, raise awareness or advertise something. The main thing is that the message needs to be clear.
My design decisions
I decided to create an advertisement poster for Avengers: Doomsday. This poster has simple goals: get superhero fans excited about the movie, encourage them to see it in theatres, and make sure they know the release date. Firstly, I started my design by finding an image of the sitting Dr. Doom on Pinterest. My goal was to give this poster a dark and gloomy aesthetic, with a menacing Doom on his throne. I then created the dark atmosphere using a black background and creating the green smoke effect. Using images of rocks, ruins, and Greek pillars, I built his throne. I added Iron Man’s arc reactor on Doom’s cape. It’s a little nod to the fact that they are played by the same actor (Robert Downey Jr.). I then played with the hue/saturation to make my greens more vibrant, added shadows, and a glowing effect to Dr. Doom’s eye. I chose to communicate my message really simply with a short, catchy slogan and a short call to action in a font that feels epic, theatrical, and easy to read. Lastly, I finished by playing with text size to create a visual hierarchy.
